The first newspaper of record in Hamilton County dates back to 1873. Three newspapers existed at one point, and in 1942 the two remaining Republican-Register and Aurora News were merged into the Aurora News-Register. Kurt and Paula Johnson purchased the publication from R.L. Butch Furse in 2000. Porchlight Publishing, Inc., includes the weekly newspaper as well as a multi-faceted commercial division that produces sheet-fed printing, vinyl signs, t-shirts and digital color copying. The company has a staff of 10 full-time and one part-time employees. The News-Register was one of the first weekly newspapers in Nebraska to post a website in 1995, and now shares information in a variety of digital platforms including Facebook, Twitter and mobile.
