  • Key Differentiator
My California Cannabis is the successor to CalPotNews.com, which was founded in 2009 as a news aggregate site. My California Cannabis will continue to track news headlines around the state, but it will present them in a format more palatable to readers and source news outlets. A lot has changed since 2009, in part because of the cannabis-legalization debate spurred by Proposition 19 in 2010. While that ballot measure didn’t pass, voters in Colorado and Washington state were able to capitalize on the national debate inspired by Prop. 19, with both states passing measures in November 2012 to legalize possession and sales of adult-use cannabis. Here in California, the news has been less encouraging, especially since the U.S. Attorneys Offices launched a coordinated campaign against medical cannabis dispensaries in October 2011. Hundreds of collective-dispensaries have closed since then, although some survivors and new operators have shifted gears to mobile delivery services. Harborside Health Center, which operates two model dispensaries in Oakland and San Jose, is coming under the same sort of federal pressure but is fighting back in court with support from Oakland city officials. While people can debate California’s boom-and-bust green rush, much of that drama has less to do with medical cannabis patients and collectives than it does with California cannabis laws and the attitudes of federal and/or local law enforcement. Accordingly, My California Cannabis will go beyond the headlines to help explain the laws and what they mean for patients, growers and collectives. It’s treacherous ground, lest someone confuse legal information with legal advice, but the need has never been greater.
