The year after the city of Hollister was incorporated, the newspaper that was to become the Free Lance was founded October 18, 1873, under the name of the Hollister Enterprise. There were several other papers that came out of the area but the Enterprise was the only one to last until present. The paper was also called The Democrat when owned by W.J. and A.J. Jones. In 1884 the newspaper sold to Lester P. Baldwin and Robert Shaw, who renamed it The Evening Free Lance. W.B. Winn, a former preacher, bought out the partners in 1886. The Free Lance became a daily in 1910, after going through several more owners and partnerships. In September of 1960, the Free Lance moved into its present site at 350 Sixth St., its fifth home since it was founded. September 5, 1967 marked the conversion of the Free Lance to the offset printing process, thus putting it among the first of the papers in the state to do so, and probably the first for a community of this size. In January of 1981 the Free Lance was bought by McClatchy Newspapers, Inc., followed by U.S. Media and Pacific-Sierra Publishing, from which South Valley Newspapers owner Mainstreet Media purchased the publication along with eight others in 2004. The newspaper has become known for award-winning journalism and hard-hitting investigative reports. It also has embraced the technological wave of the day as multimedia community news organizations. Today, in addition to publishing in print each Friday in San Benito County, the news is delivered 24/7 on the web at sanbenitocountytoday.com and via mobile apps to smartphones – providing watchdog coverage of local politics, schools, county issues, crime and breaking news in a county of 56,000.
