About Us The Palladium-Times History "Palladium", in addition to being malleable metallic element with the symbol "Pd" on the periodic table of elements, is also a word of Greek origin defined as "something that affords effectual protection or security" or a "safeguard". "Palladium" was also the original name given to the statue of Pallas at Troy in ancient Greece. The Greeks believed that the statue was a gift from the heavens and that so long as the statue was kept safe; no harm could come to people of Troy. The Palladium-Times can map its own history back to pre-civil war days, when The Palladium's first issue as a weekly came out in 1819. The other division of the newspaper, The Oswego Times traces its origins to 1845 when the Commercial Daily Advertiser became Oswego's first daily newspaper. After a long period of battling one another, the two newspapers that supported opposing political parties, merged to become one daily newspaper with an independent political voice. The merger became official on April 14, 1925 and the one-time rivals that actually neighbored one another on West First Street came together much to the surprise of some city and county residents. In 2008, the Sample News Group acquired The Palladium-Times from Gatehouse Media moving it to a privately held status, which hadn't been seen since the ownership days of The Morrison and Leighton families prior to 1966. After 1966, The Palladium-Times saw a host of corporate chains buy and then sell the operation including Thomson Newspapers, American Publishing Co., Community Holdings, Inc., Liberty Group Publishing, and the aforementioned Gatehouse Media, Inc. Sample News Group is a privately held operation that specializes in small, community dailies and weeklies. Because of this niche, they understand the value of relevant, hyper-local news content across multiple media platforms. Sample News Group’s investment in the Oswego County market is a testament to this newspaper’s success, longevity, and resiliency in a community that truly appreciates its “Pall-Times”. It is also a testament to the hard work and dedication of an exceptional and passionate team at The Palladium-Times. 140 West First Street, Oswego, NY 13126-1597 Phone: (315) 343-3800 Fax: (315) 343-0273 Standard Business Office Hours: Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
