BOARD GAME GEEK - 3 out of 4

The tense excitement of Elder Sign is now available on your mobile device! Elder Sign: Omens places you in control of up to four intrepid investigators, as they fight to keep all-powerful Ancient Ones from invading our world through a museum’s arcane exhibits!

*Build a team of unique investigators*
*Explore an ever-changing museum*
*Face challenging arcane tasks*
*Save the world from absolute destruction*
*Expand the horror with two exciting in-app purchases*

Can you stand against the impending arrival of a malevolent Ancient One?

While Elder Sign: Omens brilliantly conveys the spirit of the Elder Sign dice game, a few noteworthy differences were adopted to optimize the mobile play experience:

-A limited number of available Ancient Ones streamlines the game play experience while offering adjustable levels of difficulty. Face Yig in normal mode, Azathoth or Tsathoggua in hard mode, or Cthulhu or Ithaqua in very hard mode (in-app purchases required to face Cthulhu and Ithaqua).
-A number of subtle changes increase the peril of defending humanity. For example, the random negative effects drawn every midnight are more challenging, and the frequency of “no effect” results has been decreased. Monsters have likewise been altered to make them more difficult.
-Finally, there are no Ally cards in Elder Sign: Omens, which further streamlines play while increasing the overall challenge.

Too shallow for Arkham

As a fan of Arkham Horror I thought this would be an abbreviated and portable version of AH. However, it is not even deep enough to be considered "Arkham Lite". It is essentially Cthulhu Slots. With 95% luck involved, the strategy consists primarily of choosing the correct character for the correct mission. The professor goes to lore heavy rooms while the gangster goes to skull heavy rooms. The weapons, items, and spells are all the same dice. No variations exist except for food giving you health back etc. Basically you just spin til you win...or lose. This could have easily been rehashed into a thousand other themes and been Star Wars Dice or Warhammer Roll Battle or Lord of the Rings War of the Six Sided Cubes...but in the end it is just mindless rolling. The dice mechanics are fun in the way that checkers or tic tac toe are fun. The theme is mildly amusing for the first few playthroughs. But I would have figured his would be free or at most 99 cents. Save your money and get table top simulator on steam. You can get all the Fantasy Flight Games for free and then some.

Game is insanely difficult and requires no skill.

This game has lots of potential and could be extremely fun if it weren't impossible to win. It is about luck, and the dice are stacked against you. There is no benefit it repeatedly playing the game (no extras unlocked). I am all for a hard game, but this game takes it way to far. Especially since it requires pure luck to win and not strategy.

Boring

Very little skill or input on users end. Looks great and has an eerie vibe so it brings the stars up.

An Excellent, Challenging Game!

This game is a genuine masterpiece: as someone who loves the genre (and has played CoC for thirty years), I was NOT disappointed, so a big well done to the games designers! Atmospheric, challenging, complex. A lot of people have complained about its difficulty, but (1) the Lovecraft world is meant to be one where humans die a lot, (2) while it may FEEL bad when you've invested an hour in playing to fail, my success rate is about 2/3 on the first ten plays, which is fine, (3) there are LOTS of little tricks to work out to improve your chances, like putting several characters into the same scenario, which ups the number of glyphs you can lock between conjures, and finally 4) don't despair if you end up down at a single character with lots to do: the game dynamic means that they do all the work which means that they can accumulate a lot of clues, extra glyphs etc that would otherwise be distributed amongst many characters, so they become very powerful. The last is seriously nail-biting but if you play it right you can have a seriously heroic ending! Enjoy!
